A New Hobby

Hey!! Long time to see, am I right? That would be my bad- sorry!

Senior year has been absolutely destroying me. I'm taking a bunch of AP classes so the workload is astronomical, and then of course there's regular old teenage things like clubs, sports, and my job. But oh well, at least I'm here now, right?

I wanted to revamp my website a little bit, and finally got around to doing so. I also want to try and make my blog posts a priority, so we're going to aim for a weekly blog post at least through the end of the year... we'll see how it goes!

Today, I wanted to talk to you guys a little bit about my new hobby that I've discovered lately: writing poetry! I've always loved writing, but I've always stayed closer to prose, not really brave enough to give poetry writing a try. But (this is so embarrassing) I actually went through a breakup this summer, (spoiler alert: I'm over it now and glad that it happened) and while I was in the thick of it, I started writing poems to get my emotions out. Taylor Swift has her songs, and apparently I've got my poems? I'd love to write songs, but melodies just don't come as easily as words do to me.

But anyway: I started writing a LOT of poems and actually really started liking it. I've written a ton more, most of them about random, everyday occurrences, or commentary on the tree outside my window, and quite a few more about imagined scenarios. I feel like there's a stigma around poetry, where it has to be a super strict, uptight thing, but that's not how I treat it at all. I love writing little haikus, and I've written a few sonnets as well, but my favorite type of poetry is lyrical, or just free verse.

Here's one that I wrote recently, called 'when it rains'

have you ever

seen when it rains?

when the entire world

washes away.

when the clouds

darken and cry

and the only light comes

from far off skies.

when the withering woods

become harbingers of disaster

and lightning sparks

leaving nothing after.

a torrential downpour

of devastation and destruction

Writing poetry is actually so much more fun than most people assume (or maybe I just find it fun because I'm strange like that... who knows?). I've been debating what to do about my new hobby, because I love getting to share my words with people, so I've started creating videos of spoken poetry, which I upload to my social media accounts (youtube, instagram, and tiktok are all @ellieanneauthor). I really enjoy it, and I feel like there's actually an audience for it, and I find it crazy that it's not just me who cares.

But yeah! That's it for now, I guess I just wanted to share what I've been working on lately. I want to write another book, but I've been lacking the motivation to write in prose for a while now, and have mainly stuck to unfinished thoughts in my poems. Until next time, my lovely people!
